Send To Returner: One MWC Award
Nov. 29, 2010
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV true freshman Marcus Sullivan (North Las Vegas/Cheyenne HS) was named the Mountain West Conference Co-Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday.
The Rebel wide receiver was the highlight of UNLV's 48-14 defeat on Saturday as he set a school record with 224 yards on six kickoff returns for a sparkling 37.3-yard average. He shattered teammate Deante' Purvis' mark of 185 yards set just last season against BYU.
Sullivan's night vs. the Aztecs included a 60-yard return on the first play of the game and then a career-long 73-yard return later in the half that set up his team's only offensive touchdown of the game. He currently leads the MWC and ranks sixth in the nation with a kickoff return average of 29.96 yards per attempt. He shared the weekly award with Utah's Brandon Burton, who blocked BYU's potential game-winning field goal.
Sullivan is the second Rebel freshman to be honored by the league this month as running back Tim Cornett was named Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Nov. 15.
The Rebels close their first season under head coach Bobby Hauck by traveling to Hawaii for a non-conference affair on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. PT.
