COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The UNLV men's golf team shot an opening-round 7-under-par 281 in the morning on Saturday and followed with a second-round 2-under 286 during the afternoon, putting the Rebels in second place at the 41st Annual Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, which is being held at the Eisenhower Golf Club's Blue Course (par 72, 7,301 yards).

UNLV's 36-hole total of 9-under 567, trails tournament-leading Utah (276-288--564, -12) by three shots. Washington State (285-283--568) is third at 8-under, Colorado (282-288--570) is fourth at 6-under, while Colorado State (288-284--572) and Northern Colorado (283-289--572) are both tied for fifth at 4-under.

Northern Colorado's Steve Bidne and Utah's Mike Branca are both tied for the individual lead at 7-under 137. Bidne shot rounds of 4-under 68 and 3-under 69, while Branca turned in scores of 7-under 65 and even-par 72.

There is a four-way tie for third place, one shot back at 6-under, which includes UNLV senior Brett Kanda. Kanda shot rounds of 4-under 68 and 2-under 70. Rebel teammate, sophomore Derek Ernst is also in the top 10. Ernst shot 3-under 69 and even-par 72 to tie for 10th at 3-under 141.

Other Rebel players: freshman Kevin Penner is tied for 17th at 1-under 143 (72-71), while sophomore Colby Smith (72-76) and junior Jeremiah Wooding (75-73) are both tied for 51st at 4-over 148.

The tournament, which features 19 teams and 108 individuals, will conclude on Sunday with 18 holes.
