Rebels Finish 10th At Preview

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The No. 16 UNLV men's golf team shot a final-round 16-over-par 304 and finished in 10th place at 29-over 893 on Sunday at the PING/Golfweek Preview held at Purdue University's Kampen Course (par 72, 7,467 yards). The tournament was a preview to the 2008 NCAA Championship, which will be played on the same course.

The Rebels (293-296-304--893, +29) finished 26 shots behind team champion Charlotte (288-288-291--867, +3), who shot a final-round 3-over 291 and finished the tournament at 3-over as a team. Second-round leader Oklahoma State (294-279-298--871, +7) shot a final-round 10-over to finish the tournament at 7-over, four shots back. USC (293-293-287--873, +9) finished third, Alabama (301-290-290--881, +17) was fourth and Minnesota (295-291-296--882, +18) rounded out the top five.

Charlotte's Stefan Wiedergruen (70-71-68--209, -7) shot a final-round 4-under 68 and won the individual title by two shots at 7-under 209. He was one of only four golfers to record a below-par final score.

UNLV was led by senior Jarred Texter (75-73-74--222, +6), who shot a final-round 2-over 74 and finished tied for 23rd at 6-over. Other Rebel players: sophomore Eddie Olson (74-74-75--223, +7; T29th), freshman Ji Moon (72-73-79--224, +8; T34th), senior Matt Kinsinger (72-78-77--227, +11; T47th) and senior C.J. Gatto (76-76-78--230, +14; T55th).

Next up for UNLV will be the Shootout at Angel Park in Las Vegas, Sept. 29-30, but the Rebels will not compete as a team, instead sending individuals to compete. UNLV's next team competition will be Oct. 8-9, at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate in Birmingham, Ala.
