LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV senior men’s golfer Shintaro Ban has been included on the 2018 Fred Haskins Award Watch List, which was announced Thursday by the Haskins Commission.
The Haskins Award presented by Stifel will go to the Most Outstanding Collegiate Golfer of the Year. Known as the "Heisman of Golf," the award is the oldest in college golf (dating back to 1971) and is named in honor of Fred Haskins, who dedicated his career to teaching junior golfers the art of competitive golf. It is the only award voted on by players, coaches, SID's and select golf media. Former UNLV golfer Ryan Moore won it in 2005. The full watch list may be found here.
Earlier this month, Ban was also named to the Ben Hogan Award Watch List and is a candidate to compete in the 2018 Arnold Palmer Cup.
Ban leads the Rebels in scoring average this season with 69.78 per round. He has finished in the top 20 in all six of his events this season, including four times in the top 10. He earned individual medalist honors at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate in Alabama during the fall.
During the team's trip to Australia over winter break, Ban tied for second at the Australian Master of the Amateurs and his final round of 8-under 63 set the Royal Melbourne Golf Club's record for low round.
Ban, who was named honorable mention All-America last season, is on track to earn his degree in economics at the end of this semester. He has also been a member of the athletics department's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
The Rebels will be back in action this Sunday-Monday, Feb. 25-26 at the National Invitational Tournament in Tucson, Ariz.
