LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - For the second straight time, UNLV men's golf senior Shintaro Ban has been named the Mountain West Men's Golfer of the Week. This is Ban's fourth career MW Golfer of the Month/Week accolade and his third of the season.
Ban led the Rebels to their first team title of the year with a dominant performance at the National Invitational Tournament in Tucson, Arizona, Feb. 25-26. He earned medalist honors by two shots at 16-under 200, which marked the seventh-lowest score for a 54-hole tournament in Rebel golf history. It was his second individual win of the season and third of his career.
Ban shot all three rounds of the tournament in the 60s (68-65-67) and averaged 66.67 per round. Over the tournament's 54 holes, Ban had 20 birdies with only four bogeys.
Ranked 10th in the country by Golfstat, Ban has finished in the top 17 or better in all seven events this season, including five top 10s, three top fives and two victories.
Ban is on track to earn his degree in economics at the end of this semester and he has been a member of the athletics department's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. An honorable mention All-America last season, he was also named an All-America Scholar. He is among the candidates to play in the Arnold Palmer Cup and on the watch lists for the Hogan and Haskins Awards, which go to the nation's top collegiate golfer.
NEXT FOR THE REBELS: UNLV will be back in action Monday-Wednesday, March 5-7, when it hosts the Southern Highlands Collegiate at Southern Highlands Golf Club in Las Vegas. The 15-team tournament includes four of the nation's top 10 teams and nine of the top 30. The tournament is open to spectators and admission is free.
