Men's Golf Set To Host Some Of The Nation's Best

LAS VEGAS ( - Many of the nation's top collegiate golf programs will showcase their talent early next week at the Southern Highlands Collegiate, will will take place Monday-Wednesday, March 5-7, at Southern Highlands Golf Club in Las Vegas (par 72, 7,510 yards).

The public is encouraged to attend the tournament and admission is free for this prestigious event that annually lures the country's best college golf teams and each year ranks at or near the top of the collegiate golf schedule in terms of strength of field.

THE FIELD: The 15-team field includes four of the nation's top-10 ranked teams according to Golfstat and nine of the top 30: Alabama (4), Florida (5), Oklahoma (8), Texas Tech (10), Illinois (14), USC (19), UCLA (21), Pepperdine (28), BYU (30), UNLV (35), TCU (36), Northwestern (43), UCF, Washington and SMU.

THE FORMAT: The 54-hole stroke-play tournament will consist of 18 holes each day. Teams will play five players with the low four scores each day counted for the team total. Individual ties will be broken by sudden-death playoff.

TEE TIMES: Each day will begin off the No. 1 and No. 10 tees at 9 a.m. 

THE LINEUP: Competing for UNLV will be senior Shintaro Ban (ranked the No. 10 individual in the country), junior Harry Hall (81), freshman Jack Trent, freshman Garrick Higgo (62) and sophomore Justin Kim. Sophomore Justin Chong and freshman J.J. Gresco will compete as individuals.

LAST OUTING: UNLV dominated the National Invitational Tournament in Tucson, Arizona, Feb. 25-26, with a 54-hole total of 50-under par, finishing 12 shots ahead of second-place Arizona State. It was UNLV's first team title of the season. All five Rebel golfers finished among the tournament's top 12 and in a rare feat, each UNLV player was under par in each round of the tournament. Individually, Ban earned medalist honors by two shots at 16-under 200, which marked the seventh-lowest score for a 54-hole tournament in Rebel golf history. It was his second individual win of the season and third of his career. He was then named Mountain West Men's Golfer of the Week for the second straight time.

UNLV IN THE SHC: UNLV has won the team title at the Southern Highlands Collegiate in seven of the last 13 years.

LAST YEAR: UNLV finished sixth as a team at the 2017 Southern Highlands Collegiate at 10-over. The team champion was USC with a score of 11-under. Individually, California's Collin Morikawa and Oklahoma's Grant Hirschman tied for first at 6-under. Hirschman won on the first playoff hole with a birdie. UNLV's top finisher last year was John Oda, who tied for seventh at 4-under. Ban tied for 21st at 3-over.

THIS YEAR: UNLV has competed in seven tournaments this season. In their spring season opener in Hawaii, the Rebels tied for second. The NIT was their second event of the spring.

NOTABLE: UNLV is the two-time defending Mountain West champions. The squad won a NCAA Regional last year and advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA finals. Ban and Hall are both 2017 All-Mountain West Team honorees, and Ban earned honorable mention All-America honors. In addition, Ban was named an All-America Scholar. This year, Ban is a candidate to play in the Arnold Palmer Cup and is on the watch lists for the Hogan and Haskins Awards, which go to the nation's top collegiate golfer. UNLV has played in a NCAA-record 29 straight regionals. This year marks head coach Dwaine Knight's 31st season leading the program.
