Rebels Fall At Home To Beavers 3-0|
Sept. 3, 2006
LAS VEGAS - Following a scoreless first half, Oregon State notched three second half goals to top the UNLV men's soccer team 3-0 in the second game of the UNLV adidas Invitational on Sunday afternoon at Peter Johann Memorial Field. In the first game of the day, Denver scored once in each half to post a 2-0 victory over Temple.
Though OSU (3-1) held a 6-3 edge on shots in the first half, the Rebels (0-3-1) were able to keep the Beavers off the scoreboard. Oregon State broke through in the 66th minute however thanks to a Hiroshi Nishito score. The Rebels attempted to clear the ball out of the box, but it came right to Nishito, and he quickly blasted a shot to the left post from 22 yards out for the goal.
The Beavers would then score twice in the last 10 minutes of the contest. UNLV goalkeeper Brett Hafeman was forced to come out of the goal to play a ball on the right side, and the ball was deflected over toward the left side of the goal. Again a Rebel defender attempted to clear the ball, but Josh Cameron stepped in front to steal the pass, and before Hafeman could get back in position, Cameron quickly scored on the empty net for a 2-0 lead in the 81st minute.
The final goal came from Robby Christner, as his free kick from 25 yards out went through the wall untouched to the left corner in the 86th minute.
Hafeman finished with three saves in goal for UNLV, while Packy Dennihan posted four saves to earn the shutout for OSU. The Beavers held a 15-6 edge on shots, and 4-1 edge on corner kicks.
In the first game, Jacob Chase scored the eventual game-winner in the first half, while Colin Jones headed in a cross from Joey Mathot in the second half to lift the Denver Pioneers (2-1-1) to the 2-0 victory over Temple (1-1-1).
UNLV will next return to action on Saturday, Sept. 9, at Pac-10 member San Diego State in a 2 pm contest.
