Rebels Shut Down In California|

BERKELEY, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 road contest at 18th-ranked California on Sunday afternoon in the Cal Legacy Classic, played at Edwards Stadium.
UNLV (2-1) came into the contest having won two straight, but the Bears would take an early 1-0 lead in the eighth minute. Davis Paul collected a deflected shot by teammate John Fitzpatrick and knocked the ball into the back of the net for the score. Cal (2-1-1) would increase the lead to 2-0 in the 34th minute, again off a deflected this shot. This time it was A.J. Soares scoring on a rebounded shot by Steve Birnbaum.
The Bears' third and final goal came in the 68th minute, when Anthony Avalos took a shot that was deflected out to Paul, and he scored for his second goal of the game, making it 3-0 in favor of Cal.
Cal finished with a 19-7 edge on shots, and 12-2 on corner kicks. UNLV's Simon Cook posted four saves in goal, while David Bingham recorded five for the home team.
UNLV returns to action on Friday with a road contest at Wisconsin-Green Bay at 5 pm in the first game of the Green Bay Soccer Classic. The Rebels will then finish against Robert Morris on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 10 am.
