ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The UNLV men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to Evansville in the first game of the University of New Mexico Tournament held Friday evening at the UNM Soccer Complex.
Evansville and UNLV would play into a scoreless first half. The Purple Aces, however, would get on the board first after the interval. At the 46:11 minute mark, Evansville's Mike Lavergne scored on an unassisted play for the 1-0 lead.
Two red cards were later accessed to both teams in the second half. Senior Kelly Frederick (St. John's, Antigua) and Evansville's Jose Chairez were ejected in the 56th minute on separate infractions. Frederick, the team's third leading scorer, will miss Sunday's matchup versus Cal Poly.
With 13 seconds to spare in regulation, freshman Rod Dyachenko (Vancouver, Wash.) scored the game-tying goal, his third of the season, on a pass from junior Alex Hernandez (Indio, Calif.) to send the match into overtime.
In the 104th minute, Ryan Youngblood netted the overtime golden goal off a double assist from teammates Casey Stevens and Lavergne for the victory. The Purple Aces improve to 2-2 on the season, while UNLV drops to 2-3.
Next up, the Rebels face non-conference opponent Cal Poly (1-3) on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 11 a.m. (PST).
