LAS VEGAS - Sophomore midfielder Boomer Arbelaez (Las Vegas) scored the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute to send the UNLV men's soccer team past Central Florida, 3-2, on the final day of the UNLV / FILA Classic held Sunday afternoon at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
Arbelaez, a former Gatorade State Player of the Year out of Bishop Gorman High School, connected from 10-yards out on a leftside cross by sophomore defender Chris Henderson (Henderson, Nev.) to seal the deal for the Rebels. This marked his first career goal in a Rebel uniform, after transferring from the University of San Francisco.
Two minutes into the first half, junior Leandro Iocco (Rosario, Argentina) netted his first goal of the season on a chip-in from 30-yards out to open the scoring. Central Florida's Zegai Habtom immediately answered back with a game-tying goal at 2:41 from 20-yards out.
With the game tied at one apiece at halftime, both teams looked to get ahead in the second half of play. At the 60:55 minute mark, junior Alex Hernandez (Indio, Calif.) scored his fifth goal of the year on a pass up the middle from senior Kelly Frederick (St. John's, Antigua). Hernandez currently leads the team in scoring with 11 points on five goals and one assist.
UCF retaliated back with another game-tying goal at 69:54 courtesy of Billy Judino on an unassisted play from 8-yards out. The Rebels, however, would outlast the Golden Knights until the very end.
Senior goalkeeper Justin Dennis (Scottsdale, Ariz.) made four saves in goal, while Central Florida goalkeeper Ryan McIntosh had six. UNLV improves to 5-3 on the season.
The Rebels go on the road this weekend traveling to Southern California to compete against UC Irvine on Friday, Sept. 27 at 8 p.m. and No. 13 nationally-ranked San Diego on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 2:30 p.m.
