Freshman Marco Gonzalez scored a pair of goals, including the eventual game-winner midway through the second half to give UNLV men's soccer a 3-2 home victory over UTRGV in WAC play Friday night at Peter Johann Memorial Field. The Rebels won their fourth straight home game to improve to 3-1 in league play, 6-7 overall. That places them in a tie for third place with nine points, two points behind current conference leader Seattle (11 points).

THE TURNING POINT: The game was tied at 1-1 early in the second half, until Timo Mehlich blasted in a shot for a score from the middle of the box in the 51st minute. The play started when Danny Musovski stole the ball and fed a streaking Jesus Partida down the right side. Partida wasted no time in sending the ball back towards the middle to Mehlich for his second goal of the season. That put UNLV up 2-1, and the Rebels would only allow just two total shots from the Vaqueros the rest of the way.

REBEL OF THE GAME: Gonzalez, a Las Vegas native, notched the second two-goal game of his career in the victory. He posted the first score of the night in the 22nd minute, collecting a pass from Mehlich off the right side, and blasting a shot back to the left post from 12 yards out for a 1-0 Rebel lead. He then scored an insurance goal in the 68th minute, off a beautiful free kick that he curved over the wall to the back left corner of the goal, for a 3-1 UNLV advantage.

STAT OF THE GAME: Shots in the second half were 12-2 in favor of the Rebels.

"Timo made a great run on the right side, and I was just able to finish it off for the first goal. On the second goal, I've been practicing my free kicks and it paid off tonight."
- UNLV freshman Marco Gonzalez

"I think its always important to get a win, especially at home. We're going to host the WAC tournament this year and we want to enforce that this is our home field and take advantage of that. Very difficult game to win tonight, they play a great defense set, but we were able to break it down, Marco had a pair of great goals."
- UNLV Head Coach Rich Ryerson

* UNLV is on a four-game home win streak, its longest since opening the 2015 season with four straight home victories.
* The Rebels have outscored their opponents by a 16-4 margin during their home win streak.
* Danny Musovski moved into a tie for fifth in UNLV history with his 22nd career assist.
