UNLV Men's Soccer Falls to New Mexico 4-1
Oct. 13, 2006
LAS VEGAS - New Mexico scored just 1:25 into the game, thanks to a goal from Jack Smithson, and cruised to a 4-1 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation victory over UNLV Friday on a rainy, cold night from Peter Johann Memorial Field.
After entering the halftime break ahead 1-0, the Lobos tacked on two quick strikes out of the gate. UNM's Stephen Brown made the score 2-0 in the 48th minute after he stole the ball in midfield and sent it past UNLV goalkeeper Brett Hafeman. New Mexico struck again four minutes later, as the Lobos added to the lead when Blake Danaher one-timed a cross from Brandon Barklage to make the score 3-0.
UNLV (0-11-2, 0-5) got on the scoreboard in the 56th minute thanks to an unusual goal from sophomore Ben Haugland. UNM keeper Mike Graczyk came off of his line to try to clear a long pass, but his clear attempt came out low, and Haugland was able to jump in front of the kick, deflecting the ball 20 yards back into the Lobo net.
New Mexico would add another goal in the 63rd minute, as Andrew Boyens headed in a corner kick from Justin Davis to finish off the scoring.
The Lobos (9-3-1, 4-1) led in the shot department, firing 13 shots to UNLV's seven, while also holding a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
UNLV is off for a week before traveling to Albuquerque, N.M. to take on the same New Mexico Lobos next Saturday, with kick-off set for 6 pm (PST).
