LAS VEGAS - The UNLV men's soccer team improved to 2-0 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference play after taking down the University of Denver, 2-1, Friday night at Peter Johann Memorial Field.

Senior Kelly Frederick (St. John's, Antigua) had the game-opening goal at 22:01 with the give-and-go inside the box from junior Alex Hernandez (Indio, Calif.) to put the Rebels up 1-0.

Denver later made the counterattack as senior Nick Hartman netted his sixth goal of the season off a defender deflection in the 39th minute for the tie.

Both teams ran the field and had numerous scoring opportunities in the second half. In the 61st minute, freshman Rod Dyachenko (Vancouver, Wash.) scored the game-winning goal taking the ball across the box on a double assist from Frederick and Hernandez.

Senior goalkeeper Justin Dennis (Scottsdale, Ariz.) collected five saves on 14 shot attempts by the Pioneers, while Denver goalkeeper Brian Lux made three saves. The win evens the all-time series at 1-1.

Hernandez, Frederick and Dyachenko all lead the Rebels in scoring this season. Hernandez is currently the conference's leading scorer with 22 points on seven goals and a league-leading eight assists. Frederick is second on the team with 17 points on six goals and five assists, while Dyachenko is third with 10 points on five goals.

UNLV (9-5 overall, 2-0 MPSF) next hosts league opponent Air Force (7-7-1 overall, 1-2 MPSF) on Sunday, Oct. 27 at noon in Las Vegas.
