Oct. 28, 2012
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Denver scored two quick goals at the beginning of the second half to take control on the way to a 3-0 win over UNLV in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
UNLV (6-12-1, 4-4 MPSF) and the Pioneers (9-5-3, 4-4-1) were tied at the half, and the Rebels held a 5-3 edge on shots. The game suddenly changed directions just after halftime. A scramble in the box for the ball led to a Zach Bolden pass that Josh Wren collected and then placed in the back of the net for a 1-0 Denver lead in the 48th minute. Almost exactly two minutes later the Pioneers struck again, and again Bolden assisted on the score. This time he sent a cross into the middle of the box to Anees Abdulgasem, who spun around with the ball before quickly shooting a shot past the Rebel goalkeeper for a goal in the 50th minute.
Denver added to the lead in the 72nd minute. Ryan Dodson redirected a cross from Jack Henderson into the goal for a 3-0 advantage. UNLV would finish the half with just four shots, and suffered just its fourth shutout of the season.
The final shot total was 10-9 in favor of the Pioneers, while both teams took two corner kicks each. Olivier Brown finished with one save for Denver, and Joe Vitale posted four for UNLV.
UNLV will close out the regular season on Friday, Nov. 2, with a Senior Night contest against CSU Bakersfield at 7 pm. The Rebels, who have clinched a spot in the 2012 MPSF Tournament, will open play in the first round of the tournament on Thursday, Nov. 8. New Mexico is the host of this year's conference tournament.
