LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV controlled the action for the majority of the night, but CSU Bakersfield would take advantage of a late foul to score a golden goal in double-overtime and hand the Rebels a 1-0 Senior Night loss on Friday at Peter Johann Memorial Field. The Rebels, who finish the regular season at 6-13-1 and 4-6 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play, will be the sixth seed in next week's tournament, which starts on Nov. 8 in Albuquerque, and will find out on Saturday night who their first round opponent will be.
Things looked to be going UNLV's way near the end of the first overtime when Scott Luedtke of CSUB (9-4-5, 6-3-1 MPSF) was red carded after a hard foul on Salvador Bernal, leaving the Roadrunners a man down for the rest of the game. UNLV was not able to take advantage however, taking a total of three shots over the extra 17 minutes after taking 12 in the opening two halves. Midway through the second overtime, the Roadrunners drew a foul on UNLV after a collusion right outside the box on the left side. Lucas Dall'Orso would take the free kick, and curved a shot that went around the wall of defenders and found its way into the back of the goal on the right side for the game-winner in the 107th minute.
UNLV had held a shot advantage in the opening two halves, 5-3 in the first and 7-4 in the second. Despite the goal, the game was one of the best overall defensive efforts by the Rebels all season long, who came within three minutes of handing CSUB a shutout after falling to the same squad by a 5-1 score in the first meeting between the two back on Sept. 29.
Joe Vitale posted seven saves in the net for UNLV, while Eric Shannon finished with three on the night for the Roadrunners. CSUB also held a 5-3 edge on corner kicks.
