Rebels Fall Again On Colorado Trip

DENVER, Colo. - Denver outshot UNLV 34-3 and scored twice in the second half to take a 2-0 shutout victory over the Rebels in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's soccer action on Sunday afternoon. The Rebels fall to 6-11, and 5-6 in the MPSF with the loss, while the Pioneers improved to 10-5-1, 7-3 in league play.
Two costly fouls helped Denver to its two scores, as a foul was called just outside the box following a Pioneer corner kick in the second half. Liam Girard blasted the free kick through the wall and into the back of the net for the score at 53:40. UNLV goalie Peter Clitheroe was then ejected from the game with a red card at 70:20, and Denver took advantage of the shorthanded Rebels. Girard took the ensuring free kick and touched passed the ball to James Merriam, who sent a shot past UNLV's Matt Johnson for the score.
Matt Bredehoft earned the shutout for Denver while making just one save. Clitheroe finished with six saves and one goal allowed, while Johnson allowed one goal and posted one save.
UNLV finishes the season on Sunday, Nov. 14 at 2 pm at San Diego State.
