LAS VEGAS - It appears that second-year head men's soccer coach Mario Sanchez is signing some of the best players around as Daniel Cruz, who recently committed to play for the Rebels next season, was asked to join the United States U18 national squad.
Cruz, a 5-8 forward from Glendale, Ariz., is scheduled to take part in camp with the U18 national team over a week long period, spanning March 4-10. The team features players from national collegiate powerhouses Virginia, Clemson and Indiana; along with many of the nation's top youth club teams.
Cruz is a three-year starter for the Ironwood H.S. Eagles, where he twice earned first-team all-region honors, and was first team all-state and all-Arizona as a junior. He holds the school's all-time goal record at 70. Cruz also played three years of football, earning first team all-region honors as a freshman running back, and played one year of baseball as well. He currently is a member of the Olympic Development Program (ODP) West Region Team for the 90 age group and is also a member of the Sereno Soccer Club.
