Staff Changes, Additions For Rebels
Aug 30, 2013
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Several staff additions were announced by UNLV men's soccer head coach Rick Ryerson on Friday. Liam Connors was promoted to Associate Head Coach, while Dan Schell has been hired as assistant coach and Frank D'Amelio will be a volunteer assistant for the Rebels this fall. Both Schell and D'Amelio are making a return to the coaching staff.
This will be Connors' fourth year on the staff, after serving as assistant coach for three seasons. He is also a member of the coaching staff for the US Youth Soccer Region IV ODP Staff Region IV ODP Camp 2013, having been in the role of both assistant coach for the `98 Boys and Head Coach for the U15 Boys. Connors is involved as well with the US Soccer Youth National Team Scouting Network, responsible for identifying players and facilitating US Soccer Training Centers in local markets.
He came to Las Vegas after spending two seasons as assistant coach at his alma mater, the University of Redlands in California. As an assistant for the Bulldogs, he assisted in all aspects of running the team while also serving as the recruiting coordinator. Connors also spent a year as an assistant coach for Millikin University in Decatur, Ill.
"Liam has been an instrumental part of the program since day one, in all aspects of the position with coaching of the program on the field, administration of the program and many other responsibilities," said Ryerson. "His efforts in the community and with the program have easily earned him this new title."
Schell rejoins the Rebels after a year break, as he had been a member of the coaching staff from 2008-11. He started as a volunteer assistant to former Head Coach Mario Sanchez before moving into the assistant coach position, with his main priorities being the training of the Rebel goalkeepers.
While he was away from UNLV, Schell was promoted to the Head Goalkeeping Coach for Region IV Boys Olympic Development Program (ODP). He has been a part of the Region IV staff since 2005 as a staff coach and an assistant age group coach. Coach Schell is also the Goalkeeping Director for Heat FC , and oversees all goalkeeping instruction for the Club. Prior to this he was the Goalkeeping Director for Nuesort FC (2008-2011), as well as the Goalkeeping coach for FC Portland (2004-2008).
"Dan is one of the best goalkeeper coaches in the country," said Ryerson. "He was here my first two years, and we're very happy that he could back and join the staff once again."
D'Amelio comes back to the UNLV program as an volunteer assistant after serving an eight-year stint as assistant coach from 1998-2005 under former Head Coach Barry Barto. D'Amelio brings more than 40 years of experience as both a player and a coach into his role with the Rebels.
During his time away from the UNLV program, D'Amelio has had several coaching positions in Las Vegas, including two years as head coach at Las Vegas Premier SC, six years as head coach for NeuSport FC, and has been with Heat FC since 2010. Currently he is a Pro Staff Coach for Heat FC with U14 and U12 Boys teams. D'Amelio also was the head coach for two professional teams in the area as well, the Las Vegas Strikers for one year, and one season as Head Coach for the Las Vegas Toros indoor soccer team.
"There is no more a loyal guy to UNLV men's soccer then Frank," said Ryerson. "He is also a big part of the local soccer community. He has a keen eye for the game, and that will be a advantage to us on the field."
