The Rebels had a new face in goal at the start of the season this past weekend in Virginia, as redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Nathan Bohn began 2016 as the starting goalkeeper for UNLV. He posted an impressive start to the year as well, as after UNLV dropped the opener at ODU, he came up with five saves and held VCU to just one goal in 104 minutes in the 2-1 double-overtime Rebel victory.
“Losing the first game was disappointing,” said Bohn. “But as a goalkeeper you have to have short term memory to learn from what happened and get over it quick.” Going into game two against VCU, Bohn was already over the loss against Old Dominion. “In the back of our mind, if we could get away with a split for the weekend, the momentum for our next games would be ours,” said Bohn.
Prior to Bohn becoming a Rebel, he was a standout goalkeeper for Arbor View High School in Las Vegas, Nev. where he started in goal his junior and senior year. He was All-Northwest League Goalkeeper of the Year as a senior leading the Aggies to the state playoffs as well as many other honors.
In his first year on the Rebel squad, Bohn would take a redshirt before appearing in two games in 2015. He played 90 minutes and recorded two saves while allowing a goal. “Being the back-up goalkeeper kind of gave me the incentive to work harder in the spring,” said Bohn. “I also had to make sure to keep up my training at a high level in the summer, because when the coaches aren’t around its on you to make sure you stay at that level.“
Coach Rich Ryerson has seen nothing but improvement from Bohn since he started as a Rebel. “He has definitely matured and grown since coming in as a freshman and earned a starting role,” stated Coach Ryerson. As the week progressed with training, Coach Ryerson states he is very confident with Bohn being in goal this weekend and he is excited to see him develop.
“I’m feeling confident about this weekend and the coaches have been preparing us well,” stated Bohn as the Rebels get ready for the Johann Memorial Classic. The Rebels are set to kick off against Cal State Fullerton on Friday, Sept. 2 at 7 pm at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
