UNLV Takes On Creighton, SW Missouri State
Sept. 11, 2003
LAS VEGAS - The UNLV men's soccer team will be looking to earn its first win of the 2003 season this weekend, but it won't be easy as the Rebels will be taking on a pair of strong teams in the Ameritas Classic, hosted by Creighton in Omaha, Neb. UNLV will meet Creighton at 7:30 p.m. (CST) on Friday, and will play the Southwest Missouri State Bears on Sunday at Noon (CST).
The Rebels, who have been outscored 13-4 this season, will need a better defensive effort this weekend. All four goals for UNLV have been scored by a pair of players, with midfielders Alex Hernandez and Victor Arbelaez both registering two scores for the season.
Creighton begin last week with a #12 ranking, but fell out of the top 25 after a 0-0 double overtime tie with Santa Clara and a 2-1 loss, also in double overtime, to Loyola Marymount this past weekend. The Bluejays offense has also struggled this year with just four goals over four games. Guido Leon has been strong in goal however, with 21 saves and a 0.64 goals against average this year.
Southeast Missouri State, who plays Portland in the first game on Friday at 4:30 pm, is 2-0 this year with wins over Valpariso and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation member Air Force (1-0). Senior forward Jamal Sutton has two goals and one assist to pace the Bears, while junior midfielder Doug Lascody also has tallied two goals this season. Goalie Matt Pickens has allowed just one goal over two games, but has only seen an average of five shots a game.
The second day of games will be on Sunday, Sept. 14, as UNLV opens the day against SMS at Noon, while Creighton and Portland kick off at 2:30 p.m.
