Sept. 23, 2010

UNLV Weekly Soccer Notes

The UNLV men's soccer team (2-4) will host a pair of games this weekend in the UNLV Rebel Classic, including a Sunday afternoon (1 pm) contest against 18th-ranked UC Irvine. It’s the Friday night game however that has all the attention from Rebel fans, as for the first time, former Rebel standouts Rich Ryerson and Rob Ryerson will face off against each other as coaches. Rich Ryerson is the first year head coach of the Rebels, while older brother (by 11 months) Rob is the coach of Mount St. Mary’s, UNLV’s opponent on Friday night which kicks off at 7 pm.

Both Ryersons were members of the 1985 UNLV soccer team that finished 18-2-2 and fourth in the nation, and which is being inducted into the UNLV Athletic Hall of Fame on Oct. 1. There will also be a special recognition at halftime on Friday for all the Rebel soccer alumni, highlighted by the 1985 squad.

Players To Watch

The Rebels are paced by their two starting forwards, senior Stephen Sifuentes and sophomore Nick Marshall, both of whom are tied for fifth in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation with six points off two goals and two assists. Freshman and Las Vegas native Joaquin Rivas is also tied for the team lead in goals with two, which includes a golden goal in the Rebels’ 2-1 overtime win at Stanford on Sept. 10. Also with four points is sophomore Robert Garcia, with one goal and two assists through six games.
