Rebels Fall In Overtime
Issac Ikyurav scored his second goal of the game midway through the first overtime to rally Sacramento State past UNLV 3-2 in men's college soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Hornet Field.
All About The Rebels
There’s no doubt that UNLV has played one of the toughest schedules in the nation, as its five losses have come against teams that are currently 29-4-2 overall. All five teams are either currently ranked or receiving votes in the top 25 polls as well, while the Rebels’ strength of schedule is currently ranked 15th toughest in the nation.
The top returning player for the Rebels this year is junior Las Vegas native Salvador Bernal, the top returning scorer from any team in the conference, and an all-region pick in 2012. Sophomore midfielder Rodrigo Fuentes is currently first in the WAC in points while senior forward Joaquin Rivas is tied for fourth overall in points, and Bernal is tied for second with three assists. In goal is expected to be junior Ryan Harding, who saw action last weekend for the first time since 2011 after undergoing chemotherapy treatments.
Scouting Sacramento State
The Hornets have struggled in finding the back of the net this season, as the team has been held to only four total goals in seven games this year, and has yet to score more then once in a goal, while also being shutout in three contests. UNLV will be the fourth WAC team the Hornets will face this year, as their lone win came in the opener at San Jose State. Sac State has also suffered a loss to Bakersfield (3-0) and a tie with Seattle.
Chimdumi Mez has a team-high four points, off a goal and two assists, to led the team this season. In goal is Cesar Castillo, who is posting a 1.45 GAA and has two shutouts this season as well.
Next Time Out
The Rebels open Western Athletic Conference play by hosting Bakersfield on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 1 pm at Peter Johann Field. That game will also be shown on the Mountain West Network, thanks to the UNLV-TV student run production.
