MPSF Player of the Week Honors Awarded to Hernandez

WOODLAND, Calif. - For the second time of his career, UNLV junior midfielder Alex Hernandez (Indio, Calif.) was named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Brine Player of the Week by the league office Monday.
Hernandez amassed four-points in the men's soccer team's 3-0 shutout of UC Riverside on Oct. 6. He nailed his second game-winning goal of the season in the 22nd minute, before assisting on two second half insurance goals scored by senior teammate Kelly Frederick (St. John's, Antigua).
The team's current leading scorer with 17 points on six goals and five assists, Hernandez shares the conference scoring lead with New Mexico freshman Ben Ashwill. He also leads the league in assists (5) and is second in goals scored (6).
Hernandez was last awarded conference weekly honors after registering his first career hat trick in a 6-1 upset of defending national champion and fifth-ranked Connecticut in 2001.
AROUND THE LEAGUE...The Rebels (7-4) continue to hold the second spot in the latest MPSF standings, behind defending MPSF champion New Mexico (9-2). UNLV will face Saint Mary's College in a non-conference road match this weekend on Oct. 13, before opening conference play at San Diego State (3-6-1) on Oct. 18.
