Oct. 17, 2003
LAS VEGAS - After not having played a game in almost two weeks, the UNLV men's soccer team is ready to return to action as they will open conference play on Saturday night at New Mexico at 7:30 p.m. in Albuquerque, N.M., in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest.
The Rebels, 3-8 on the season, haven't played since a 4-1 loss at UC Riverside on Oct. 5. UNLV, who will be looking to stop a three-game losing streak, has been led this season by senior midfielder Alex Hernandez, who has eight goals and one assist on the season (17 points). Victor Arbelaez has three goals on the year and two assists, while Leandro Iocco has added two goals. Peter Clitheroe has seen the majority of time in goal, and has 20 saves and a 2.77 goals against average.
New Mexico has also struggled this year, boasting a 3-6-3 record, and the Lobos have lost their last three games as well. Lance Watson paces the team with five goals and one assist for 11 points, while Stian Eriksen and Jeff Rowland both have tallied three goals this year.
Following the New Mexico game, UNLV will return home and will host San Diego State on Monday, Oct. 20, at 7:30 pm in game designated at the Rebels' "Break the Record Attendance" night. UNLV will attempt the top the previous record attendance of 1,200, set four previous times, most recently on Oct. 7, 1994 against UCLA.
