LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV's Mike Mota was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Men's Soccer Player of the Week after leading UNLV to an overtime upset of first place Air Force, the league office announced on Monday. Mota, a 6-2 senior defender and Las Vegas native, is the second Rebel to be honored this year, and its the first weekly honor in his career.
The Rebels trailed Air Force 2-1 midway through the second half on Oct. 26 when UNLV received a free kick outside the box. Mota took the kick and blasted a rocket through the wall to the back of the net to tie the score in the 68th minute. The game would go into overtime, and after another foul and a free kick for UNLV, Mota again took the kick. Once again he sent a blast to the back of the net from outside the box for the golden goal and a 3-2 overtime win for the Rebels. It was Mota's first two-goal game of his career, the second game-winner of his career, and the first golden goal of his career.
UNLV stands at 6-12-1 on the year and at 4-5 in league play have clinched a spot in the MPSF Tournament. The Rebels close out the regular season on Friday with a Senior Night contest against CSU Bakersfield at 7 pm at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
