LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Three UNLV players, Salvador Bernal, Nick Marshall and Mike Mota were named to the All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Men's Soccer Teams, the league announced on Wednesday.
Bernal, the 2011 MPSF Newcomer of the Year, was the only underclassman on this year's first team as he made a repeat appearance on the squad. A sophomore forward and native of Las Vegas, Bernal is tied for fourth in the conference in scoring with a team-high 19 points, and is also tied for fourth in goals with seven. He also has five assists on the season, good for a tie for eighth in the MPSF, while a team-high five of his seven goals came in league action.
Marshall earns his third career season honor from the MPSF after being named first team in 2010 and honorable mention in 2011. A senior forward from Tucson, Ariz., Marshall finished the regular season with 13 points off five goals and three assists. He is currently tied for ninth in the league in points and earned MPSF Player of the Week honors once this season, on Sept. 17, after posting five points in a 5-1 upset of Canisius. He had two game-winners this season, against Canisius and Cal State Northridge.
Mota is another repeat selection following an honorable mention in 2010. The captain of UNLV's defensive backline, Mota started every game this season and also scored three goals. Against Air Force on Oct. 26, he scored the final two goals of the game, including a golden goal for a 3-2 win, which earned him MPSF Player of the Week honors on Oct. 29.
The Rebels take on Air Force in the first round of the MPSF Tournament on Thursday at 4 pm (PT) in Albuquerque.
