Velazquez Named Outstanding Rebel of the Week

Nov. 23, 2016

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV Men's soccer junior Oscar Velazquez has been named the Outstanding Rebel of the Week presented by Air Force Reserve, the school announced Wednesday. This is the second-straight week men's soccer has earned the honor after fellow junior Danny Musovski captured the award last week.

The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition from Monday through Sunday as voted on by the UNLV Athletic Communications department.

The North Las Vegas product scored the winning penalty kick to give UNLV a 6-5 shootout victory at No. 19 San Diego State to advance the Rebels to the second round of the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1985. The midfielder also assisted on the team's first half goal as teammate Adam Musovski headed in a score off a Velazquez free kick into the box. Velazquez collected four goals and six assists during the 2016 campaign to rank third on the team in points with 14.

The Rebels won three-straight games in the WAC Tournament to earn their second NCAA postseason bid in the last three years. The season came to an end in a 3-0 second round loss at fourth-ranked Denver, who has yet to lose a game in 2016.
