LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept a Mountain West Conference meet against TCU on Friday at Buchanan Natatorium. The 16th-ranked Rebel men claimed a 158-135 win to improve to 4-1 overall, 2-0 in the conference, while the UNLV women (4-5, 3-2 MWC) took down the Horned Frogs by a score of 160-140
UNLV's win on the men's side avenged its only conference loss of last season. It was depth that carried the way on Friday, as the Rebels won eight of the 15 events but posted several second and third place finishes, and more importantly swept both relays. The 200 medley relay squad of David Seiler, Andrew Morrell, Cody Roberts and Steven Nelms posted a first-place time of 1:28.68, while Nelms, Charlie Tapp, Kyle Virva and Seiler won the 400 free relay in a time of 3:01.90.
Virva also won two individual events for the Rebels, beginning with a first-place time of 1:39.98 in the 200 free. He also won the 100 free in 45.60. Other individual winners included John Mendoza in the 500 free (9:23.62), Nelms in the 50 free (19.85), Kier Maitland in the 500 free (4:33.64) and Roberts in the 100 fly (48.72).
In the women's meet, the Rebels won eight events as well, beginning with the 200 medley relay team of Rachel Dixon, Lisa Gillespie, Katelyne Herrington and Friderika Szel that posted a time of 1:45.38. Jessica Heim won the two distance events, turning in times of 5:00.63 in the 500 free and 10:34.93 in the 1000 free.
Also winning individual events was Lara Sreibers in the 200 free (1:52.04), Dixon in the 100 back (57.52), Anja Crawford in the 200 back (2:03.72), Brittany Ozar in the 200 IM (2:08.17), and Orsolya Tompa in the 100 fly (56.30).
The Rebels return to action on Friday, Jan. 14, when they take on Air Force and Denver in a tri-meet in Denver at 3 pm (PST).
