Rebels Suffer First MWC Loss

FORT WORTH, Texas - The UNLV men's and women's swimming and diving team split a Mountain West Conference dual meet on Saturday afternoon, with the UNLV women and the TCU men coming out on top in the final regular season meet for the Rebels.
In a matchup of teams undefeated in conference action, the TCU men claimed a 177-117 victory to earn its first-ever MWC regular season championship. UNLV would win a total of six out of 16 events on the afternoon, led by Kier Maitland's victories in the 500 free (4:32.91) and in the 1000 free (9:30.24). Steven Nelms also won two events on the day, in the 50 free (20.56) and the 100 fly (48.47), while Kyle Virva touched the wall first in the 200 free (1:41.11). The Rebels added a relay victory as well, with Virva, Calan Eldridge, Charlie Tapp and Nelms swimming a time of 3:03.67 in the 400 free relay.
UNLV's women won both relays and had a triple-event winner in Ana Dangalakova to help it post a 174.5-123.5 victory over the Horned Frogs. Dangalakova swept the back events, winning the 100 in 58.36 and the 200 in 2:04.16, and also won the 200 IM (2:07.18). Marva Harpak claimed two wins, in the 100 free (52.17) and the 200 free (1:52.61). Single event winners included Marley Prothero in the 100 breast (1:07.73), Madison Rousell in the 50 free (23.93), Nakalya Chan in the 200 breast (2:24.57) and Mariah Skeen on the one-meter board (279.83).
Dangalakova, Lisa Gillespie, Emma Gustafsson and Rousell won the 200 medley relay event in a time of 1:46.26. In the 400 free relay, Harpak, Friderika Szel, Haley Porter and Andree-Anne Genereux were first with a time of 3:28.49.
UNLV's next action will be at the 2010 Mountain West Conference Championships, held Feb. 24-27 in Oklahoma City, Okla.
