Men's Swimming in Third Place at WAC Championships

SAN ANTONIO, Texas. - UNLV concluded first-day action at the 1998 WAC Swimming in Diving Championships with 150 points and third place. UNLV is currently trailing SMU (222) and BYU (213). Erik Scalise highlighted the day for the Rebels as he captured the 200 individual medley and a new UNLV record with his time of 1:47.55.
Petr Kratochvil also had success in the 200 IM, finishing in fifth place with a time of 1:50.09. Two of UNLV's top distance specialists were finalists in today's 500 freestyle. Tomasz Piotrowski finished fifth (4:29.77) and Michael Rosen took seventh (4:32.19). Mike Mintenko was the top Rebel finisher in the 50 free, clocking 20.55 and fifth place. The Rebels 400 medley relay team of Piotrowski, Bobby Middleton, Mintenko and Ryan Kelly swam to a third place finish (3:16.78) in the last event of the day.
Competition continues on Friday with swimming prelims starting at 11:00am and diving prelims at 2:00pm. Finals for both swimming and diving begin at 6:30pm.
