Jan. 13, 2005
LAS VEGAS - For the second time this season, UNLV's Joe Bartoch was named Mountain West Conference Men's Swimmer of the Week following an outstanding performance against two top-15 teams, the league announced on Thursday.
In the Rebels' double-dual meet against No. 6 California and No. 14 North Carolina on Jan. 6 in Las Vegas, Bartoch, a junior from Ontario, Canada, won both his individual events and led both relays to wins against both the Bears and the Tar Heels. His impressive day helped the Rebels top UNC 183-100, though they fell to Cal 177.5-118.5, and it improved UNLV's record to 4-1 on the year with two wins over ranked teams thus far.
Bartoch began the meet swimming the fly leg on the first place 200 medley relay (1:31.69). He then followed with wins in both the 100 free (45.62) and the 100 fly (49.53), and finished the meet leading the 200 free relay to a first place time of 1:22.47.
Both the Rebel men's and women's teams will take on Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton, Fla., on Friday to conclude their winter break training trip. The meet will start at 11 am (PST). The UNLV women bring a 5-4 dual meet record in the meet.
