LAS VEGAS - The County Commission on Tuesday, April 5, at 9:15 a.m. will honor the UNLV men's and women's swimming and diving teams, who recently both won their first-ever Mountain West Conference Championships, breaking a five-year hold on the championship title by Brigham Young University.

The commission will present a proclamation to UNLV President Carol Harter, Head Coach Jim Reitz, Assistant Coaches Kunio Kono, Rick Pratt and Jamie Maier, Diving Coach Julie Whitehead, swimming team captains Joe Bartoch, Adam Martinson, Jessie Bradshaw, JaNae Ferante, Jessica Field, and the rest of the swimming and diving teams.

The commission will declare throughout Clark County UNLV Swimming and Diving Teams Day. The board meeting starts at 9:15 a.m. and this item is expected to take place at the start of the meeting, which is held in the Commission Chambers on the first floor of the Government Center at 500 S. Grand Central Pkwy.

"Under the leadership of Head Coach Jim Reitz, these great athletes have brought national recognition to Las Vegas with their stellar performance," said County Manager Thom Reilly. "They in turn need to know that we appreciate all their efforts and hard work and that we applaud the fine example that they set for all of us."

At the conference championship in February, the Rebel men scored 839 points, 93.5 points ahead of second place BYU. They won eight events overall while setting four new conference records. The Rebel women scored 701.5 points, 31.5 ahead of BYU, and claimed wins in six events and set one new conference record.

UNLV followed up its championship performances by sending six men to the NCAA championships and finishing with three top-16 relay finishes, the most in school history, and all three earned honorable mention All-American status;

UNLV finished with 18 points in the meet to finish 24th at the NCAA championships, the second-highest finish in school history, while all six Rebels scored at the meet. Reitz was also named Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year, while Raluca Udriou was named Mountain West Conference Female Swimmer of the Year. Also, earning Honorable Mention All-American relay honors at the NCAA Championships were Bartoch, Jonathan Hugo, Brandon Nelms, Bjorn Ericksson, Michael Day and Adams.

Both teams have shown success in the classroom as well as they have received America All-Academic Team status. The men's team GPA of 3.22 was seventh-highest in the nation this past fall, while the women had a team GPA of 3.20.
