Oct. 8, 2008
LAS VEGAS - The UNLV men's swimming and diving team, four-time defending conference champions, were picked to win a fifth-straight league title, while the Rebel women were picked to finish in a tie with Utah for second as the Mountain West Conference preseason coach's polls were released by the conference on Wednesday.
The UNLV men just barely took first place over BYU, as both teams received three first place votes each, but the Rebels finished with 23 total points, two more then the Cougars (21). Wyoming was picked to finish third with 18, while Utah was fourth (12), Air Force fifth (11), and TCU sixth (5). The Rebels did lose several conference championships from last season due to graduation, but is expected to use its depth to rise to the top once again, and will be led by the top distance group in the conference, highlighted by Kier Maitland, 1650 free championship as a freshman in 2008.
On the women's side, BYU was picked to win with 63 points and eight first place votes. UNLV received the other first place vote, and had 54 total points, as did the Utes of Utah. Wyoming was picked fourth (42), Colorado State fifth (34), TCU sixth (28), San Diego State seventh (24), San Diego State eighth (17), and Air Force ninth (8). The women bring back one conference champion from last season, Amanda Weinbrecht in the 200 back, while Bailey Kustermeyer and Ana Dangalakova will also pace the women's squad.
The season starts for UNLV women Friday, Oct. 24 at 2 pm against Colorado State at Buchanen Natatorium. The UNLV men's first action will come on Nov. 7-8 at the UC Irvine Shootout.
