LAS VEGAS - A pair of UNLV freshman swept the Mountain West Conference Swimmer of the Week honors, the conference announced on Wednesday. Bailey Kuestermeyer was named the Women's Swimmer of the Week, while Johann Claar picked up the Men's Swimmer of the Week award for their performances against top-25 Arizona State on Sunday.
Claar, a native of Bankeryd, Sweden, turned in a true ironman performance against the 25th-ranked ASU men, winning two events and adding a second-place finish to lead the Rebels to the 121-120 upset win. In his first ever collegiate race, Claar held off Luis Azevedo by just 0.19 seconds to win the 1000 free in a time of 9:22.60, which also ranked as the fourth-fastest time in school history. He followed that with a second-place swim in the 200 fly in a time of 1:52.39. Just three events later, Claar took the 500 free by almost four seconds, again over Azevedo in a time of 4:31.45.
Kuestermeyer won both events that she swam against the 17th-ranked Sun Devils. The Puyallup, Wash., native began the afternoon by winning the 400 IM by over six seconds in a time of 4:29.03. She then added a win in the 200 breast in a time of 2:19.73, which is the 10th-fastest time in UNLV history.
Both the Rebels teams will next swim at new MWC member TCU on Friday at 12 pm (PST) in Forth Worth, Texas.
