Enjoying a new challenge this spring is fourth-year assistant coach Stephane Matheu-Cambas. After three seasons with the men’s program, one of the West’s top assistants joined UNLV women’s head coach Kevin Cory’s staff. Honored in 2002 as the ITA Regional Assistant Coach of the Year, Matheu-Cambas, 30, is a native of Paris, France, and entered the coaching profession after a successful pro tennis career. Ranked No. 1 in his home country in the 16-and-under division and then No. 2 in the 18-and-under category, he played on the ATP Tour from 1992-99 after earning a French Baccalaureate in Le Mans. He went on to reach a ranking as high as No. 26 in France and No. 286 in the world. In 1998, he earned a tennis teaching degree from the French Tennis Federation and spent has spent summers as assistant manager of the French Players’ Association. “Stephane has been a very positive addition to the women’s program,” Cory said. “He brings a new sense of energy. He had the respect of the team from day one because he is a great player, great coach and a great person. We are thrilled to have him in the program.”

Matheu-Cambas is currently pursuing his bachelor’s degree in business at UNLV. He has a daughter, Kara, born May 5, 2001.
