LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men’s tennis team faced a tough task in its season-opener Saturday and fell 4-0 to 11th-ranked host Baylor in the first round of ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
Playing indoors at the Hawkins Tennis Center because of rain, the Bears improved to 2-0 on the year by quickly taking the doubles point and then sweeping the three completed singles matches in what was the first meeting of the programs.
REBEL OF THE MATCH: Ruben Alberts was one of two Rebels to win a set, using a tiebreaker to take a 7-6 lead on No. 64 Bjoern Petersen at the second spot in the lineup before his match was halted.
STAT OF THE MATCH: Baylor boasted two ranked singles players and the nation’s No. 2 doubles team in its lineup.
QUOTABLE: "Baylor is obviously a tough team to play anytime but especially in our opening match of the season. We didn’t compete very well in doubles but put up a good fight in three of the singles matches. Now we have to regroup and be ready for a tough Big Ten opponent Sunday.”
-UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook
NEXT FOR THE REBELS: UNLV moves into the consolation round and will play Purdue, which lost to No. 21 Florida State 4-0, in the morning match starting with doubles at 9 a.m. PT.
