Netters Improve To 8-0 At Home In 2013
March 10, 2013
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The 68th-ranked UNLV men's tennis team remained unbeaten in eight home matches this season with a 5-2 win over Air Force on a gorgeous Sunday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Rebels, who have won four straight, improved to 9-4 overall while the Falcons fell to 8-6. The match was the first of two between the teams this season and will not count in the Mountain West standings.
UNLV had to rally, however, as the visiting team won the doubles point vs. the host for the first this season. The Rebels' only triumph came on court three where Gilad Berman and Willie Sublette held off Andrew Parks and Steven Young 8-6.
Moving to singles play, Ace Matias improved his individual record to 16-6 by upsetting 86th-ranked Lance Wilhelm 6-3, 6-1 at the top of the lineup. UNLV also won four other singles matches in straight sets to clinch it: Tamas Batyi won 6-3, 6-2 over Young at No. 2; Berman won 6-4, 6-2 over Grant Taylor at No. 3; Charlie Alvarado won 6-1, 6-4 over Parks at No. 5; and Johannes Markel continued his hot play with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Jack McCullers on court six.
"We started off really flat in doubles but certainly bounced back in singles against a competitive Air Force team," UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook said. "Now we get some time to heal up, rest up and get better."
The Rebels are off until hosting a doubleheader vs. Southern Utah and Idaho State on March 25 beginning at 10 a.m. Admission to all matches is free of charge.
