March 24, 2012
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's tennis team put up a good fight against No. 47 Rice but ultimately fell 5-2 on an overcast Saturday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Rebels fell to 7-9 while the Owls improved to 13-5.
Rice bolted to a 1-0 lead by taking all three doubles matches. Moving to singles, UNLV earned two wins and pushed another match to three sets before losing.
Scoring for the hosts were Tamas Batyi, who swept Peter Frank 6-1, 6-3 at the third position, and Bernard Schoeman, who used a marathon super-tiebreaker to rally past Phillip Seifert 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 (17-15) on court six.
The match was played as part of the USTA Campus Kids' Day and the players returned to the courts to run a free clinic for juniors players. The program is being offered at more than 100 men's and women's matches across the nation this season and designed to expose more junior players (along with their parents and coaches) to college tennis.
The Rebels, who are 1-0 in Mountain West play, are now off until they host conference rival TCU on April 6 beginning with doubles play at 12 p.m. Admission to all UNLV matches is free of charge.
