April 2, 2014
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's tennis team downed Montana 5-0 on a gloomy, cold and suddenly wet Wednesday afternoon in the desert at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Rebels won for the seventh time in the last eight outings to improve to 11-8 while the Grizzlies, who are undefeated in the Big Sky Conference, fell to 6-9 overall.
UNLV began the day by taking the doubles point in their seventh straight outing. Denys Pume and Ace Matias won 8-1 over Ethan Vaughn and Semion Branzburg at the top spot and Tamas Batyi and Willie Sublette doubled up Mikolaj Caruk and Peter Mimnagh-Fleming 8-4 on court two.
In singles play, Matias defeated Caruk 6-4, 6-1 at the top spot; Batyi downed Branzburg 6-2, 7-6 at No. 3; Sublette downed Tomasz Soltyka 6-1, 7-5 at No. 4; and Jakob Amilon won over Mimnagh-Fleming 6-2, 6-1 on court six. The remaining two matches were then halted because of rain that hit the area.
The Rebels will close out their home schedule by hosting New Mexico on Sunday beginning with doubles at noon. The squad's two seniors -- Batyi and Sublette -- will be honored before the match. Admission is free of charge.
