Men's Tennis Splits Doubleheader

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's tennis team split a doubleheader -- losing a conference matchup to Utah State 4-3 in the morning and defeating Southern Utah 7-0 in the afternoon slate -- Sunday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

In the early affair, the Rebels fell to 11-7, 0-2 overall in the Mountain West while the Aggies improved to 14-7, winning their second conference match of the season.

UNLV took an early 1-0 lead vs. USU by winning two of three doubles matches. Evaldo Neto and Jakob Amilon beat Samuel Serrano and Kai Wehnelt 7-6 (5) on court one and Courtney Lock and Alexandr Cozbinov downed Andrew Nakajima and Jaime Barajas 6-2 at the bottom of the lineup to earn the team point.

In singles, the Rebels won two matches to eventually see things all tied at three. Amilon edged Barajas 7-6 (5), 6-4 at No. 1 and Cozbinov rolled past Wehnelt 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2.

All eyes then turned to the sixth court where Rebel Richard Solberg won the first set 6-4 and had four match points in the second before eventually falling to Jonas Maier in a heart-breaking marathon 4-6, 7-6 (11-9), 6-4 clincher.

The afternoon slate saw the Scarlet & Gray improve to 12-7 by taking down the Thunderbirds 7-0, dropping their record to 4-14.

UNLV began the afternoon by taking two doubles matches to secure the team point. Alberts and Adam Gage-Brown defeated Guy Feigin and Ben Yeacker 6-1 at No. 2, while Solberg and Charlie Croxford won by the same score over Sergio Palacio and Micah Alba on court three.

 

 

In singles, the Rebels won all six matches to secure the shutout. Cozbinov beat Conor Tordoff 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1; Neto edged out Feigin 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2; Gage-Brown defeated Palacio 6-0, 6-4 on court three; Lock downed Nico Enrique Schmidt 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4; Solberg beat Cedric Rupa 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 and Kevin Chau got his first win of the season by defeating Yeacker 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6) on court six.

The Rebels will return to the Fertitta Tennis Complex as they are set to host their final home matches of the season -- Friday, April 7 against Nevada, Reno and Fresno State on Sunday, April 9. Admission to all UNLV home matches is free of charge.
