April 7, 2013
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (UNLVRebels.com) - he 64th-ranked UNLV men's tennis team downed Air Force for the second time in the last month on Sunday, this time 7-0 on the road as part of conference play.
The red-hot Rebels, who already have tied for their most Mountain West wins in a season since 2004, improved to 15-5 overall and 3-1 in the conference while the Falcons fell to 10-9 and 0-3. UNLV also hosted AFA on March 10, winning that non-conference matchup 5-2.
Fighting a windy setting at the Academy Courts, the two squads posted a spirited doubles session to start the day and the team point came down to a tiebreaker. The Rebels got a win on court three as Gilad Berman and Carlos Di Laura downed Andrew Parks and Steven Young 8-5. After the Falcons won a close one at the top of the lineup, all eyes moved to the second position where Johannes Markel and Tamas Batyi outlasted Alex Grubbs and Jack McCullers, 9-8 via a 12-10 tiebreaker.
The Rebels used that momentum to quickly clinch the match in singles as they won on five of the six courts in straight sets. Ace Matias continued his stellar play atop the lineup by upsetting 75th-ranked Lance Wilhelm, 6-4, 6-4; Berman downed Young 6-2, 6-2 at the second spot; Batyi swept Grubbs 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3; Charlie Alvarado doubled up Parks 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5; and Markel breezed by McCullers 6-2, 6-2 on court six. The seventh and final point came when Bernard Schoeman outlasted Taylor, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6, at No. 4.
"We barely won the doubles point playing in tough conditions," UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook. "But I'm proud of how we kept that momentum going in singles to finish out."
Next up, the Rebels will host Boise State on Friday beginning with doubles play at noon. Admission to all matches at the Fertitta Tennis Complex is free of charge.
