RENO (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's tennis team closed out its regular season on Sunday with a 5-2 loss at Nevada, Reno at the Caughlin Athletic Club.
The Rebels fell to 13-10 and 3-3 in the Mountain West while the Wolf Pack improved to 18-4/4-2. The victory also gives UNR a big step toward earning three points in the Governor's Series sponsored by NV Energy. If the two teams do not face each other at this week's Mountain West Tournament in Fresno, Calif., then the Wolf Pack are awarded the points.
The hosts earned a 1-0 lead by taking two of three doubles matches. UNLV's only victory came at the top of the lineup where Ace Matias and Denys Pume combined for an 8-2 win over Victor Ouvrard and Robert Allan. In singles, UNLV picked up points when senior Tamas Batyi downed Quentin Mege, 6-2, 7-6, at No.3 and senior Willie Sublette got past Fernando Sunago 7-6, 6-4 on court five. In what was anticipated to be a showdown between two top players undefeated in conference play, Ouvrard eased by Matias 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 1 position. On Monday, UNLV will learn its seeding and opponent the conference event.
