Doubles Win Not Enough For Rebel Netters

SAN DIEGO (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's tennis team saw its season end Friday with a 4-1 loss at the hands of TCU in the opening round of the Mountain West Championships at the Aztec Tennis Center. The fifth-seeded Rebels ended 7-16 while the fourth-seeded Horned Frogs improved to 9-14. UNLV came out strong in doubles, taking two out of three to post a 1-0 lead. After TCU won the match on court three, Tamas Batyi and Johannes Markel downed Max Stevens and Daniel Sanchez 8-6 at the top spot. The point would come down to the second position and Bernard Schoeman and Brian Kenyon won a tiebreaker to down Nick Chappell and Will Stein 9-8. Singles was also competitive but UNLV dropped all three sets that went to tiebreakers. Nick Chappell tied the match with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Rene Ruegamer at No. 1; Stevens gave TCU the lead with a 7-6, 6-1 victory over Charlie Alvarado at No. 6; J.T. Sundling got by Kenyon 6-1, 7-6 at No. 3; and play was halted when Facundo Lugones finished off Batyi 7-6, 6-4 on court two. "The guys left it all out on the court today, unfortunately it wasn't enough and hats off to TCU," said UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook. "It was a tough way to end but with our returners and incoming players we look to bounce back next season."
