Men's Tennis Tops Wolf Pack To Advance In MW Tourney

BOISE, ID. (UNLVRebels.com) - The third-seeded UNLV men's tennis team punched their ticket to the Mountain West Men's Tennis Championship semifinals with a 4-0 victory over sixth-seeded UNR on Friday morning at the Appleton Tennis Center. The Rebels, who will be making their second consecutive appearance in the semifinals, improved to 18-8 on the season, while the Wolf Pack wrapped up the 2017 campaign at 8-13.

With the with, the Rebels earned three more points in the Governor's Series, presented by NV Energy and Barrick Gold. The competition between UNLV and UNR is in its fifth year and is a head-to-head athletic and academic challenge between the longtime rivals. UNLV won the first four Governor's Series competitions and is ahead in this year's race by a score of 21-18.

The Rebels secured the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and 3 positions. Ruben Alberts and Adam Gage-Brown defeated Julien Evrard and Robert Margitfalvi at No. 2, while Richard Solberg and Alexandr Cozbinov beat Augustin Delahodde and Peter O'Donovan 6-3 on court three.

Moving to singles, UNLV quickly grabbed a 3-0 advantage at the No. 1, 5 and 4 positions. MW tennis player of the year Jakob Amilon would get things started for the Rebels at the No. 1 position, beating Julien Evrard in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. UNLV’s second singles point came from Solberg over Delahodde, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 5. The hosts then clinched the victory thanks to Neto beating Mile Cilic 6-4, 6-3 to advance UNLV to the semifinals.

 

 

“The guys came out with great energy and purpose today and took care of business in singles after a close doubles point,” said head coach Owen Hambrook.

UNLV will face No. 2 Fresno State in the semifinals on Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m. PT. The last time the Rebels faced the Bulldogs was Sunday, April 9 at the Fertitta Tennis Complex where UNLV came out with the 4-1 win.
