LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV program boasts three singles entries and a pair of doubles teams in the Round of 16 after the second day of action Thursday at the 2012 USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Regional Championships, which are being held this week at the Darling Tennis Center.
Tamas Batyi, seeded 10th in singles, opened the day with a 7-6, 6-4 win over Ben Gendron of Northern Colorado and then swept Mads Hegelund of New Mexico, 6-3, 6-1 to advance to Friday. Joining him is Charlie Alvarado, who won 6-4, 6-3 over Moez Charqui of Nevada, Reno in round two and then 6-2, 6-3 over Makolaj Caruk of Montana later the in the day. Newcomer Ace Matias, who transferred to UNLV from Utah, completed the trio after winning 6-1, 6-2 over Curran Wearmouth of Utah State and then 6-1, 7-6 over 12th-seeded Conor Berg of New Mexico.
The Rebels' two doubles teams still alive are Alvarado and Willie Sublette, who advanced with an 8-6 win over Air Force's Alex Grubbs and Andy Jackson; and Matias and Bernard Schoeman, seeded eighth, who defeated Tanner Dance and Matt Sweet of Utah State. However, second-seeded Batyi and Johannes Markel were upset by USU's Brandon Nielsen and Fredrik Peterson, 8-5.
The tournament runs through Sunday.
This is event one of 24 USTA/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women taking place over these middle two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles and doubles champions from the regionals will advance to the 2012 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, taking place November 8-11, at the indoor facilities at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
