LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV had a total of 48 student-athletes earn the 2011-12 Mountain West Scholar-Athlete Award, the league office announced today. With this year's tally, the Rebels have had at least 48 recognized for academic achievement each of the past four years.
The MW Scholar-Athlete Award is one of the highest academic honors bestowed by the Conference. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in an NCAA-sponsored sport.
A total of 471 student-athletes were honored, including 39 individuals who have achieved a 4.00 or higher cumulative GPA over two or more terms, and 61 student-athletes who were recognized in multiple sports.
The women's swimming & diving team led the Rebel contingent with a program-best 12 awardees, while the women's soccer team was second with eight (one shy of tying its program high).
The women's tennis and women's basketball teams each tied their highest output with four and three representatives, respectively.
Men's tennis produced three honorees, while eight programs had two: baseball, cross country, men's golf, women's golf, men's soccer, men's swimming & diving, women's track & field and volleyball. The football and softball programs rounded out Rebel athletics with one apiece.
