LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -
For the third straight year UNLV saw over 50 student-athletes receive the Mountain West Scholar-Athlete Award, as 53 Rebels were honored by the conference on Tuesday. This year's figure ties the athletic department's all-time high set in 2009.
The MW Scholar-Athlete Award is the highest academic honor bestowed by the conference. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in an NCAA-sponsored sport.
A league-record 581 student-athletes were honored by the MW today. This year's tally greatly surpasses the previous league record of 549 honorees set in 2008-09.
For the second consecutive year, UNLV's women's track and field team placed the most student-athletes on the list with a program-best eight honorees, which tied last year's output.
Women's golf set a new mark for its program with six awardees, while women's soccer (seven) and baseball (four) tied their previous-high marks.
Women's swimming and diving had six, while both men's swimming diving and men's tennis had four apiece. Volleyball and softball each added three. Cross country, men's golf and women's tennis had two per program. Women's basketball and football rounded out the 14 sports with one each.
