LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV PDF Box Score vs Nevada, Reno

UNLV's Gonzalez twins, Dakota and Dylan, nearly outscored the visiting Nevada, Reno Wolf Pack by themselves, as they combined for 39 points in leading the Lady Rebels to a 60-41 victory on Wednesday night in Mountain West women's basketball action at the Cox Pavilion. The Lady Rebels moved to 18-0 all-time against UNR in Las Vegas, and improved to 16-8 overall while remaining in fourth place in the league standings at 7-5. UNR meanwhile dropped to 8-14, and 2-9 in league play. This was the first meeting between the two teams as part of the Governor's Series, the all-sports competition with UNLV and UNR sponsored by NV Energy and Barrick Gold.

Wednesday marked the third time in the past month UNLV has held its opponent to a season-low for points. The previous low for the Wolf Pack in a game this season had been 50, but they were shut down by a Lady Rebel defensive effort that forced UNR into just 28.1% shooting (16-of-57) from the floor, while committing 21 turnovers. That lead to a 27-8 edge for UNLV on points off turnovers.

Dakota Gonzalez led all scorers with a career-high tying 23 points on 10-of-21 shooting, while she nearly missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Dylan Gonzalez was next with 16 points and eight rebounds. Also in double-figures for the Lady Rebels was Paris Strawther with 13 points and seven rebounds. UNLV shot 36.1% (22-of-61) from the field (22-of-61), was 4-of-17 from three-point range (23.5%) and 12-of-18 at the line for 66.7%. The rebounding battle also was in favor of the Lady Rebels by a 48-37 margin.

Though the Wolf Pack led just once, UNLV could not create any separation in the first half, taking a 26-22 lead into halftime. The second half was a different story however, with the Lady Rebels opening the third quarter on a 12-0 run over the first five minutes opening up a 38-22 lead. The lead was 45-31 going into the fourth quarter, and UNLV held the Wolf Pack scoreless for the final 4:58 of the contest to claim the 19-point win.

The game was tied three times in the first quarter, including at 6-6 after a UNR basket at the 3:04 mark. Strawther would hit three free throws to put UNLV up by nine, and Dakota Gonzalez went one-for-two at the line for a 10-8 Lady Reb advantage after the first 10 minutes.

UNR tied the game again on the first score of the second quarter. Following a basket from Dylan Gonzalez, the Wolf Pack took its lone lead of the game on Desirae Gonzalez's three-point at the 6:39 mark for a 13-12 contest. UNLV answered with a 9-2 run, highlighted by back-to-back treys from Dylan Gonzalez, to go ahead 21-15. UNLV lead by six twice more, before a pair of Wolf Pack free throws in the final 29 seconds closed the margin to just four.

UNLV will be on the road for the third time in four games on Saturday when it faces the San Jose State Spartans in a 2 pm matchup. The game will have a live stream available on the MW Network, which can be seen on UNLVRebels.com, while the radio broadcast will be on KSHP 1400 AM.
