LAS VEGAS ( - Northwestern shot 52.2% for the game and made 11 three-pointers on the way to a 79-49 victory over UNLV on Sunday night in the first game of the BTI Invitational, hosted by UNLV in the Cox Pavilion. The Lady Rebels dropped to 8-3 with the loss, while the Wildcats improved to 9-1 with their fifth straight victory.

The game was actually a one-point contest with under nine minutes left in the first half, 17-16 in favor of the Wildcats. Then Kendall Hackney took over, scoring 11 straight points, including three treys, to ignite a 19-0 Northwestern run over a 5:45 span. A layup from Danielle Diamant gave the Wildcats their largest lead of the half at 36-16, and they took a 38-22 edge into halftime.

Despite being down by 16, the Lady Rebels made several runs at the Wildcats in the second half. Two free throws from Jamie Smith cut the lead to 12 at 38-26, then a three-pointer from Mia Bell cut the edge to 44-33 with 15:15 on the clock. After Northwestern opened up a 15-point edge, Kelli Thompson nailed a trey and Lenita Sanford scored on a putback to make it a 48-38 contest with 12:51 to play.

Northwesten then took control with another three-point barrage, hitting three straight from Hackney, McKeown and Jones, part of an 11-0 run in a 3:11 span to go up 59-38. The lead grew to as high as 32 in the final minute.

For the first time this season all five UNLV starters finished in single digit scoring. The Lady Rebels were paced by Markiell Styles with 10 points, while Thompson added nine. UNLV was held to a season-low 21.4% (12-of-56) from the floor, made 2-of-17 from three-point range (11.8%), and was 23-of-27 at the free throw line for 85.2%. UNLV was outrebounded for the second time this year, 36-34, and turned the ball over 24 times, leading to a 28-19 edge on points off turnovers. The Lady Rebels did come up with a season-high 18 steals on the night.



The Wildcats were led by Hacknay with a game-high 22 points. Morgan Jones posted 18, while Dannielle Diamant and Alex Cohen both finished with 11 each. Northwestern shot 52.2% (24-of-46) for the night, was 11-of-21 from behind the arc for 52.4%, and made 20-of-21 at the free throw line for 95.2%.

UNLV will play its next game in the BTI Invitational on Monday against North Dakota State at 5 pm.
