Boise State's Riley Lupfer posted a career-high 28 points and hit seven three-pointers to lead the Broncos over UNLV 69-60 in the Mountain West women's basketball opener for the Lady Rebels Saturday afternoon at Taco Bell Arena. The loss for the Lady Rebels dropped them to 5-7 overall, 0-1 in league play, while the preseason favorite BSU squad improved to 8-5, and 2-0 in league play with its third straight win.
The game was knotted at 16-16 after the first ten minutes until the Broncos got hot from three-point range in the second quarter. Lupfer led the way, knocking down a pair of treys as BSU would hit 4-of-5 from behind the arc in the quarter, while the Lady Rebs scored just eight total points in the second 10 minutes. Despite its shooting struggles in the second quarter, the Lady Rebels kept the game within reach thanks to their defensive play, until the final 1:14 of the quarter when Boise State went on an 8-0 run to open up a 38-24 halftime advantage.
THE TURNING POINT: UNLV closed within 26-22 on a pair of Brooke Johnson free throws with 6:54 to play in the second quarter. The Lady Rebels would then make just one of its final nine shots of the quarter.
LADY REBEL OF THE GAME: Junior forward Jordyn Bell tied her career-high with 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting and added four rebounds and a steal in the loss.
STAT OF THE GAME: Boise State made 12 of its first 18 shots from three-point range, and finished 12-of-22 for 54.5%, outscoring the Lady Rebels by 24 points from downtown.
"The second quarter got us, that's when we just didn't execute. No. 21 (Lupfer) got hot and we never put an end to that. She's a good shooter and had a career game against us, there's like a 3-4 minute stint where she went off and that was the difference. We don't have the depth at the moment that we once had on the perimeter and that hurt us today. We're thin and others need to step up and be a part of this.
- UNLV head coach Kathy Olivier
